Daily Chat: Just Say No To Tebow

JUST SAY NO TO TEBOW

[ad#300x250inpost]

John Elway, the Denver Broncos new Executive Vice President of Football Operations, told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that he doesn’t “think Tim Tebow is a good quarterback at this level at this time,” and then subsequently back peddled on Twitter when he realized how truthful he’d been with King.

That, coupled with the fact that Josh McDaniels was in town, sparked chatter that Tim Tebow could end up a Viking.

Hey, folks, it’s as simple as this: If Tebow is not good enough for John Elway, why would we want him?

Besides, we already have a quarterback on the roster who we know can run but aren’t sure whether or not he play quarterback. His name’s Joe Webb and by the way, he’s a lot faster than Tebow.

If there’s a quarterback on the Broncos roster we should go after, it’s Kyle Orton. I’m shaking my head as I write this because he was positively horrid as the Bears QB.

He actually turned into a damned effective signal caller in Denver and is exactly the type of player you want to serve as a bridge to your quarterback of the future: A smart veteran who can manage games because that’s what rookie quarterbacks need to learn how to do first; before they learn how to win games, they must learn how to manage them.

But the following piece should put a damper on the Tebow/Orton speculation…

SO LONG, JOSH McDANIELS
Jon Merckle of the Vikings Age makes a very persuasive argument that Josh McDaniels was only passing through town on his way to Kansas City.

Merckle points out that the Chiefs’ GM is Scott Pioli, the former player personnel guy for the Patriots during McDaniel’s tenure there. There’s an opening there because offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is leaving to coach the Florida Gators, and McDaniels’ former quarterback with the Patriots, Matt Cassel, is the starter in Kansas City.

Looks like there are greener pastures for McDaniels down south.

OTHER COACHING POSSIBILITIES
The Star Tribune‘s Judd Zulgad is reporting that former Carolina offensive line coach Dave Magazu could take that same position with the Vikings.

Former Broncos special teams coordinator Mike Priefer might be in line for that position on Leslie Frazier‘s staff.

Ryan Silverfield is expected to be promoted to assistant offensive line coach.

Zulgad also speculates the Vikings could go after the UFL’s Hartford Colonials’ head coach, Chris Palmer, who was a head coach with the Cleveland Browns as well as a quarterbacks coach for the Giants.

HONORS
Defensive tackle Kevin Williams will join Adrian Peterson in Hawaii as a Pro Bowler because Lions rookie phenom Ndamukong Suh is injured.

Former Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter and former Vikings defensive end Chris Doleman are among this year’s Hall of Fame finalists. Carter had 1,101 catches and 130 touchdowns during a 16 year career. Doleman had 150 1/2 sacks during his 15 year career.

Kicker Ryan Longwell has been invited to play in the Bob Hope Classic golf tournament.

IT’S CAM NEWTON!
Pioneer Press‘ draft guru V. John Pluym has posted his first mock draft, with the Vikings taking Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton with the 12th pick. [WATCH Top NFL Draft Quarterback Highlights.]

DRAFT WATCH: TOP 5 OFFENSIVE TACKLES HIGHLIGHTS
Sadly, as we all know so well, the Vikings could use an upgrade at left tackle, considering what an abysmal season Bryant McKinnie had. I wouldn’t be at all upset if we took a left tackle in the first round. I’ve compiled video highlights of the top five tackles in the draft at the site. [WATCH.]
