Throwback Thursday
This video is of a 1978 regular season matchup of the Denver Broncos vs the Minnesota Vikings at Met Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota.
This was the last season of Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton‘s career and featured a Vikings unit that still boasted names like Chuck Foreman, Ahmad Rashad, Sammy White, Stu Voight, Mick Tinglehoff and Ron Yary on offense and Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, Alan Page, Jeff Siemon, Matt Blair, Fred McNeil, Nate Wright and Paul Krause on defense.
1978 was the twilight of the 1970s era that saw the Vikings dominate their division and make four Super Bowl appearances.
The Broncos unit featured defensive stars such as Lyle Alzado and Randy Gradishar as well as former Vikings safety, Charlie West; on offense, running back Otis Armstrong carried the ball and former Golden Gopher wide receiver Rick Upchurch was a year away from his breakout season.
As was typical of the era, it was a low-scoring affair with defense dominating the game. This video doesn’t show overtime in which Rick Danmeier kicked a 44 yard field goal giving the Vikings a 12-9 win.
