It looks like rookie cornerback Chris Cook could be good to go for Sunday. If he is, he’ll face a tough challenge for his first-ever regular season NFL game because it’s likely the 6’2″, 212 lbs. Cook will be matched up against the Lions’ monster receiver, Calvin Johnson, who stands 6’5″ and weighs 236 lbs.
You’d expect me to say “Welcome to the NFL, rookie” here, wouldn’t you?
I wouldn’t do that to you.
FAVRE ALL MIC’D UP
Vikings.com has posted an NFL Network sounds-of-the-game piece featuring Brett Favre against the Dolphins. I love these piece when they are extensive because you get some insight into what it’s like on the field during a game, especially when the player is a quarterback because of all the different roles they play. In this one, you can see Favre demonstrate his leadership, his banter with players and officials, his frustration over the lack of protection, and him and Darrel Bevell diagnosing the defense. [WATCH].
FAVRE RUNS ROUTES
For more inside-the-game insight, Star Tribune‘s Judd Zulgad has got some nice detail in a report from Winter Park, illustrating how Brett Favre is working with his receivers by running routes. To wit:
“The most interesting thing that came out of our brief access was watching quarterback Brett Favre line up as a defensive back during group drills and talk to the wide receivers about the routes he saw them run. It appeared as if Favre was giving suggestions to both Berrian and Harvin.”
It’s great to see these small details that illustrate how professional athletes work together that creates the athletic symphony that is orchestrated on the field on Sundays.
PERCY IN THE MIX
Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com reports that Percy Harvin is getting practice returning punts. That’d be nice, cause I don’t know that we can trust Bernard Berrian or Greg Camarillo.
I don’t know that we can trust Harvin either, but I do have more faith in his ability to make something happen, assuming he hangs onto the ball.
THE DANGER THAT IS SHAUN HILL
The quarterback who took the snaps for the 49ers was former Minnesota Vikings 3rd-stringer Shaun Hill, who, you’ll remember, early beat us were it not for that last-second touchdown pass from Brett Favre to Greg Lewis.
55
The number of touches Adrian Peterson has had thus far without fumbling the ball, according to Brad Childress as reported by Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins of the Strib.
IT’S OFFICIAL
Jimmy Kleinsasser is officially the second-best receiving tight end the Vikings have on the roster. That’s because Garrett Mills was released prior to the regular season and now tight end Mickey Shuler was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins after Shuler was released to make room for Hank Baskett (PRONOUNCED, Bass-KETT, according to the women I work with).
The New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts also tried to land Shuler.
THE DEETS
The Vikings vs. Lions game will be broadcast on FOX 9 in the Twin Cities with play-by-play provided by Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston giving the analysis. The sideline “reporter” is Tony Siragusa.
On radio, listen to KFAN-AM 1130/KTLK 100.3-FM; your play-by-play man is Paul Allen and Pete Bercich provides analysis. The sideline reporter is Greg Coleman.
OPPOSITION HIGHLIGHTS
I got your back with video highlights of the Detroit Lions’ first two games; against the Chicago Bears in Week 1 and against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. [WATCH.]
